The new Mercury trucks for '48: The smartest truck line ever built.

Q: I just got a 48 Ford pickup but it's an F 47. What's that all about?

A: You have a Canadian built Ford half ton truck. For some reason the Canadians used a different numbering system in 48, 49, and 50. The model number is a derivative of the truck's gross vehicle weight (GVW). A half ton truck, with a GVW of 4700, was called an F 47. The 3/4 ton truck, with a GVW of 5700, was called an F 57. The 2 ton truck, with a GVW of 15, 500, was called an F 155. You get the idea.

Q: So how is my F 47 different from an F1?

A: It isn't. Apart from the badge they're identical. Reportedly, some F 47's were built with right hand drive. I don't know anybody who has ever seen one though. It would definitely be neat to see! Additionally, all Canadian trucks had a V8 engine.

Q: I have an M 47. It doesn't look quite like an F1. What is it?

A: That's a Canadian built Mercury truck. It's basically the same as an F 47. Mercury was the same then as it is now: They are more upscale versions of Ford vehicles. They have different trim, are sold through different dealerships, and cost more. They used the same numbering system as the Fords, so the half ton was called M 47. F for Ford, M for Mercury. Get it?

Q: Where can I get parts for my Canadian truck?

A: Many parts are the same as on American trucks, so the usual reproduction houses sell them. Trim pieces and other parts that are Canadian truck specific can be more difficult to find. A reader suggests that they seem to be more abundant in western Canada. Ebay is a possible source.

Q: Do you have any part numbers for the hard to find trim pieces?

A: The Mercury badges for the side of the hood are C7RCM16850. The Mercury crest on the front of the hood is C7RCM-16736.
